Well, Mother Nature will use her magic to convince you, you just have to look closely and at right places…
This flowering perennial bears those tiny red flowers in a cone shaped bunch and as you can see the hummingbirds are absolutely loving it!
And this is Red Valerian (Centranthus ruber, also called spur valerian, kiss-me-quick, fox’s brush… ) Fragrant (?), round clusters of small bright carmine-red flowers appear atop the plant over a long season and are complemented by the fleshy, blue-green leaves. Performs in poor, dry soils. Deer won’t bother it, so that is a huge plus around here.

Where are the “snowflakes”, you may wonder…
Fortunately I don’t think Red Valerian is invasive, pretty easy to uplift them if you grow tired of them. But why would you if you enjoy watching those amazing little hummingbirds feasting on those delicate tiny red flowers!
Special thanks to my dear friend Ginger, I got my red valerian from her beautiful garden! I truly enjoy having them in my yard!
Great pics of the hummingbird and the flowers Jiao! Love the “snowflakes”. I think I have younger plants in my garden. I’ve enjoyed the different shade of red. Very nice!
Thank you Diane, glad you like it! If you don’t you know where to get them!
Love these hummingbird photos, Jiao. It’s so much fun to watch them zip from blossom to blossom. Hope you are enjoying your summer and I’m very happy the kids set this up for you! XO
Yes, they are so fast and skittish, never tired of watching them! Thank you and I’m glad you like it!
Cool! I will see if they grow in Spokane. We have the Rufus hummingbirds here. I have 3 regular females and one male. It’s fun to watch them around flowers. Nice post!
Thanks. 🙂
They are so small and seem like never staying for long while Anna hummingbirds can stay and feed for 3 plus min in one sitting…
