A couple of things happened today, convinced me more about birds intelligence!
First off a song sparrow made a nest in a Euphorbia esula/ green spurge plant about 15 ft away from our stump feeding station. It was all nice and cute until I noticed she and her mate started to chase off all the other birds trying to get food on the stump, especially the very bashful Lazulis, who are our very special summer guests and last summer was the first time we saw them! We are so happy to see them back to our place again, but song sparrows were very territorial and wouldn’t let those beautiful yet extremely skittish birds to have any peaceful meals. So the decision has to be made, let song sparrow continue nesting and other birds go hungry OR move the nest….. Song sparrows are here year around, and Lazulis along with some other birds are only going to be here till early August, so the nest has to be moved. Not knowing what’s going to happen, I moved the nest 100 plus ft away from her old spot to a Rhody bush! And what I saw a few hrs later blew our minds! Ma song sparrow has FOUND the nest and she’s sitting!!! WOW, how amazing is that? Did some kind of scent led her there or just pure mother’s instinct/intuition, no idea! I’m just really glad for her and I sure hope the new spot will work out better for everyone!
Then there is this robin nest in the Rhody bush outside our daughter’s bedroom window, we saw a robin brood quite a few years ago and it has be deserted since then, but apparently this resourceful robin decided to spruce up this old nest, added some fresh dried grass and straws, voila a perfect nest for those gorgeous blue eggs! It surely seems like this robin knows about “reuse” as well, how about that?
Well, don’t know what’s actually going on in those little birds’ tiny brains, but they certainly continue to impress me!
UPDATES:
On June 7, two of the three robin eggs were hatched, and the third one was hatched the following day!
And I went to check the song sparrow nest, her eggs had hatched a couple of days earlier, and it looks like only 3 in the nest!
Thanks again for a fun look at your nesting birds! So amazing
Glad you like it Gail, thanks.
