Last Thursday we Left home around 12:30ish to run some errand. As we were passing our neighbor’s property I saw all their sheep and goats were there but not “our” Coco! Coco was our sheep along with her Ma Latte we acquired at end of Nov in 2020, when Coco was about 7 months old. They are Katahdin hair sheep, meaning no wool shearing required. (Katahdin were first bred in Maine and the breeder named the breed after the Katahdin Mountain in Maine). Unfortunately on March 9th of last year Latte was taken down by either a mountain lion or coyote, and Coco was injured but otherwise safe! Because they are herd animals, by request our kind neighbor took her in to join their flock which contains 3 goats, 4 ewes. Coco was so traumatized over what had happened and with a deep cut injury we didn’t know if she would make it! And as the survivor she is, miraculously she recovered and is thriving in her new found home! We say hi to her every time we walk by and she will “Baaaaa” back to us, so very cute!
We knew Coco was pregnant but not sure when made me wonder at that moment if she is having her baby or babies ( as we were told katahdin tend to have twins or triplets)! I told my husband that she must be having babies! On our time out about, I kept on asking him to text our neighbor to find out, but he refused. And I thought she would have let us know if Coco was really having babies… On our way back around 5:30ish, driving past their barn, my husband said he saw Coco right there, and I looked sure enough she was there and with TWO little lambies!!! We quickly backed our car and drove into their driveway to welcome the precious twin girls Coco had successfully giving birth to! They both looked healthy and lively and she seemed to be a very attentive mother, and she probably just gave birth not more than 30 minutes ago cuz babies’ wool was still kind of wet and Coco still had afterbirth hanging behind her…Such a relief cuz Coco is a first time mother! Two little lamb girls are incredibly adorable, their coats are so different as the brown one (we call her “Mocha”) takes on Coco’s coarser curly wool (mostly on Coco front back), while the white one (Cappi short for Cappuccino. We named them such ways to keep the theme going, Coco is the mother and Latte was the Grandma) has a straight wool coat! And both girls have exactly the same color of ears which is the color of Coco’s wool! How fascinating of such interesting color and wool texture combinations! They are the cutest little bouncy creatures around, period! Personality wise we noticed that Cappi “ba”s for Mama’s attention a lot while Mocha is much more reserved and stays out of the way most of the time!
The wool still a bit wet
