I was in my garden yesterday and I heard this nonstop chirping sound came from our plum tree. I walked over there to see if there was a bird nest among those dense branches and leaves… To my surprise the sounds led me to a railroad tie gate post which has some holes on it and right away I knew there is a chickadee nest in there according to my prior experience. Sure enough the Hungry birdies in there were becoming increasingly “Angry” it seems like after a long while of chirping! And they are Chestnut chickadees!
And about 4 hours later when I went back to my garden to just check on my plants, and here was this nonstop chirping sound again and I thought it must be a parent bird trying to distract me from the babies because the sound was coming from about 10ft away where the nest is! But then I saw a little movement by the fence in the grass, ooh one of the Angry birdies had left the nest…
He is so small, really can’t fly well yet. And it looks like he is trying to get back to the nest, but wrong post buddy, and your nest is way up higher too, more than 5ft above the ground. Sure hope he can make it!
An interesting thing about those chestnut chickadees babies they have all the adult feather colors while other baby birds, such as Juncos, Robins, Song Sparrows etc., mostly have mud color feathers to blend in better with their environment as they are just fledglings.
Today I went back to check on them, thought they might have all left, but not yet, babies are still in the nest and parents are still bringing them yummy bugs/worms…Going to be a lot more work for those parents to keep a fledgling and babies in the nest all happy, I bet.
Parents brought moth, worms… Birds are beneficial for bug control for sure!
